Once upon a time; there were two farmers who were also good friends. One was a very much law abiding guy but the other one, was a bit reluctant to follow disciplinary rules and laws of his country. One day they both decided to go to the neighboring country for a visit. When they reached the country; they saw a huge mass gathered in front of the King's Palace. Upon asking; the people told them that the king died a few days back and they have gathered to choose the new king. They further explained them the procedure that; a new king is chosen by releasing a hawk and upon whose shoulder the hawk sits, automatically becomes the new king. And that everybody has gathered infect to try their luck.

After a while, the hawk was released and after circling around for few minutes; came down and sat on the shoulder of one of the two friends-- infect the one who was not that discipline loving. When they saw that he was just an illiterate farmer and also not one of their own; they decided to do the whole process again. They repeated the process two more times but all the three times the hawk sat on the shoulder of the same tourist farmer. Thus; the crown was placed over the head of the tourist farmer and was declared their King. The other friend was sent back to his country.

After a few years; the other friend who was the good guy, decided to visit to see how his friend is running the country and enjoying his new status. As he entered the country; what he saw was that crime was so rampant there that nobody was even scared of being caught by any law enforcing agency. There was hardly any crime that was not happening in that country and the people did not even had any shame. It was literally a 'free for all' that was happening there. He became very angry and decided to give a piece of his mind to his King friend for ruining the culture, society and moral values of the country.

Next morning he got the chance to meet the King and he told him about his anger over, how he ruled the country and turned it into a pathetic state. The King told him that it was not his fault as first of all; he was not responsible for making the hawk to sit on his shoulder for three times to make him the king. Secondly: although he did announce that rules will be simple in his government such that; " there will be no rules", but nobody objected to it. He told his friend that if the people did not like his government, they could have killed him but infect they liked the new law so much that there were no protests against his government. He said that he only gave the people what they wanted but never indulged in any crime; moral or otherwise himself. He told his friend that God gives people what they want and if it was not him, God would have put someone else in his place.

Interesting story. And the moral is so true. When we get what we want, instead of what we need, it often backfires in our faces. If you vote to put idiots in power, that is exactly what you get: idiotic rules and regulations. So, you will just have to live with your wishes (or vote the idiots out at the next election). Sounds simple, but here in the US we just keep putting the same idiots right back in power. They say that a sure sign of idiocy is to keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result each time.

d.william-- Even your comment is so wise. I like your views regarding differentiating between need and wish. And also your definition of an idiot-- that he does the same thing over and over, expecting a different result each time.

We in Pakistan are not any different from Americans as we also keep trying the same old tried and tested politicians again and again hoping that the politicians may have learned their lesson by now. But if we had not learn our lesson, how could we expect them to learn theirs.
